Sky’s Mount Pleasant – Review

Neverland

Sky continue their batch of new Comedy tonight with “Mount Pleasant”, a modern day suburbia that follows a Manchester couple, Dan (Daniel Ryan) and Lisa’s (Sally Lindsay) day-to-day life. It has a quality cast that includes Pauline Collins, Bobby Ball, Sian Reeves and Liza Tarbuck to name but a few. Written and created by Sarah Hooper who’s also written the occasional Shameless episode it runs along very nicely indeed.

The first episode that airs this evening (Wednesday the 24th August) on Sky 1 at 21:00 is essentially an introduction to the characters and theme and shows real promise for the rest of the series. Each character is played superbly and as most comedy fans will agree, the characters are everything in a good long running comedy.

Dan (played by Daniel Ryan) is a typical Northern working man who works for himself as a plumber. In the first episode he appears to be popular with ladies much to his wife Lisa’s (played by Sally Lindsay) disgust. Lisa’s parents (Sue and Barry) are played superbly by Pauline Collins & Bobby Ball and I’m certainly looking forward to how these two characters develop through the series. Bobby Ball appears to be a born and effortless comedic actor that brings his comedy timing perfectly to the series.

Other characters include Lisa’s boss Shelley (played by Angela Griffin) and her dippy work mate Denise (played by Ainsley Howard) who play’s a perfectly believable dim office girl. The main cast is finished off with the neighbours that include man-eater Bianca (played by Sian Reeves), Lisa and Dan’s new next door neighbour Jack (played by Owen McDonnell) and recently widowed Kate (played by Liza Tarbuck) who has just opened a new cafe with her husbands life insurance.

All in all, this is a superb new comedy that shows real promise and hats off to Sky for investing in new comedy. It’s witty, clever and current and with a batch of highly likeable characters it should do very well. With more new comedy to come from Sky in the coming months it’s happy days for comedy fans with subscription TV.

The makings of a great british comedy series, well overdue ………..Good cast and brilliant script writing. I was beginning to think we had lost our sense of humour in this country with all the political correctness. Well done Sky for investing in such a project especially here in the North West.

What a tremendous surprise, I tuned in to watch expecting another woeful sitcom in the style of “My Family” I rarely laugh out loud, but did so on a number of occasions during the show. Brilliantly written and acted, I can’t wait for the next episode. Well done Sky for investing in this show, a classic in the making methinks.

What on earth the other commenters were watching, god only knows. Mount Unpleasant has to rate as one of the most atrociously poor attempts at comedy my eyes have ever had the misfortune to witness. Cliched, hackneyed, poor characterisation, unbelievable plots. For such a strong cast, it is a shame and it must be something that won’t make it to their cv. Please do not make any more of this programme,it is worse than reality tv!

91716, we all have our own taste, it would be pretty dull if we didn’t. We happened to quite like it and feel strongly it will develop VERY well. I think it’s very difficult to judge any programme on the first episode, I think you need to give it 2 or 3 episodes. We’re really looking forward to episode 2.

Well I watched both episodes – for nothing more than to give the cast a chance. What a waste of talent. Particularly Pauline Collins and Bobby Ball.

It’s as bad as the rubbish about the pink cabs that was on recently. Same dreary old formula, council house telly.

It’s crass, hackneyed and wholly nonsensical. I won’t be watching number 3.

I’ll admit to being a little disappointed with last nights episode. I still believe it’s worth a chance but I can understand it won’t be some people’s cup of tea. I think most comedies need at least 4 or 5 episodes to get going but I’d have expected episode 2 to be an improvement on the first but we’ll see.

“Do you fancy doing it up the bum?”. I was waiting for the punch line, but actually none was necessary, that line it itself was unexpected and funny !

I’m really enjoying the series. Great characters and laugh out loud moments. I love the moments with Bobby Ball (the Dad) and Dan (the husband) singing together – brilliant!! I would like to see more stories surrounding the mum and dad, as Pauline Collins and Bobby Ball are priceless! I hope there is another series.

This has to be the worst sitcom ever and I cannot believe that Pauline Collins signed up to it. It is a middle class version of shameless nothing more , not funny at all, swearing done for effect only and characters that are so stereotyped ,and in some cases , way over the top that eludes any “acting” skill at all . It is utter garbidge and will not last more than one series, will probably appeal to Sun readers though!

James – are you referring to Sun readers who can’t spell garbage??? And middle class it isn’t. And as for stereotypes…of whom exactly? Do you know of people like this? Are there characters in other comedies the same as these characters? And if there are does it make those comedies as bad (in your opinion??)

I thought these old fashioned BBC / Victoria Wood / Dinnerladies style comedies had finally become extinct. Apparently not, and now Sky TV think we all want to watch Bobby Ball on our TVs again.
I wish I could say that seeing 3rd rate soap stars say “f**k” and “up the bum” and come out with 10year old one liners like Ali G’s “drinking from the furry cup” etc was funny but it isn’t. It was only slightly funny the first time we heard it all those years ago. I suppose we have to tolerate this kind of trash TV until the next Ricky Gervais comes along with something fresh & original like The Office.
