That’s My Boy – 1981
Mollie Sugden is perhaps better known for her role as Mrs Slocombe in Are You Being Served? or you m ay remember we covered the ill fated Come Back Mrs Noah. However she’s in fine form in this hilarious comedy about a housekeeper who discovers her employer is her long lost son, whom she gave up for adoption.
Produced by Yorkshire Television, the show ran from 1981 to 1986 for five series and two Christmas Specials, a total of thirty seven episodes.
During the days of the now defunct channel Granada Plus the series did get a repeat outing, but sadly never gets an airing these days – come on ITV.
Summary
Ida Willis, an interfering housekeeper, is employed by Dr. Robert Price and his wife, Angie, and moves into their London flat.
It’s laughter a plenty when Ida discovers that Robert is the son she gave up for adoption when he was a baby. Let battle commence when she proceeds to call him Shane, the name she gave him when he was born, much to the bemusement of Robert and his adoptive mother, Mrs. Price, an upmarket widow with whom Ida does not get on.
Add the other side of Robert’s family, the Willis side who include Ida’s troublesome brother Wilfred and bring them together with the adoptive side of his family and Robert/Shane finds himself caught in the crossfire of his two Mothers .
For the fourth series, they move to the Yorkshire village of Little Birchmarch, where Ida befriends Robert’s mousy receptionist, Miss Parfitt.
