Bernie Clifton’s Comedy Shop, 1982
Mike Craig was a prolific producer and writer of over 1200 comedy shows for both BBC Radio and TV – including: Morecambe and Wise, Ken Dodd, Jimmy Tarbuck, Al Reid, Harry Worth and The Grumbleweeds. It was Mike who wrote the legendary high-kicking sketch on the 1976 Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show with newsreader Angela Rippon.
It was a phone call from Bernie Clifton telling him about a shop he’d opened selling all manor of comedy props, costumes etc. He called it Bernie Clifton’s Comedy Shop. This gave Mike an idea. What a wonderful title for a radio show this would make. They would structure it like a department store where you moved from one department to the next. They gave it a quirky theme tune and so was born the radio show Bernie Clifton’s Comedy Shop. The show became a particular favourite of it’s producer Mike Craig.
The show was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 for four series totalling twenty six episodes between 1982 and 1986.
Summary
A fast paced show would start with it’s quirky theme tune taking the listener through various departments each packed with gags. This was followed by a series of sketches, more gags, sketches and rounding off with more gags.
