Ken Dodd’s Last Encore
There were tickling sticks a plenty as thousands of fans turned out to pay their last respects to Britain’s greatest stand up comedian.
Members of the public lined the six-mile route of his funeral cortege, which travelled from his Knotty Ash home to Liverpool Cathedral. The Cathedral was full with hundreds more fans outside watching proceedings on a big screen outside.
Tributes were paid by friends and fellow artistes including a moving tribute from fellow comedian Jimmy Tarbuck.
Describing Sir Ken as “our city’s hero, perhaps our city’s greatest hero”.
He said: “I’m pleased for Ken that there’s yet another full house”
“Was he a good comic? No – he was better than that. He was the greatest stage comedian I’ve ever seen in my life,” Tarbuck said.
“Live on the stage, he set a standard which no-one has remotely approached since.”
In true Ken Dodd style the funeral over ran by about 30 minutes.
