john thaw turns his talents to sitcom in home to roost

Home To Roost

Home To Roost, 1985

Think John Thaw and you’ll almost certainly think of The Sweeney or Inspector Morse and you’d be right.

However, in 1985 he starred in this ITV sitcom and it was rather funny.  So much so that it ran for twenty nine episodes over four series between 1985 and 1990.

It was written by one of the greats: Eric Chappell (Rising Damp, Only When I Laugh) and like his other comedies produced by Yorkshire Television.

Summary

Henry Willows is a forty somthing divorcee.  Having divorced his wife seven years ago he’s quite happy living on his own.

However when his youngest son Matthew arrives to live with him (after being thrown out by his Mother) Henry’s world turns upside down.

The comedy revolves around Henry’s annoyance at having his solitude disturbed and the age gap clash between himself and eighteen year old Mathew.
