A sitcom set in Roman times but with a twist. Whilst Frankie Howerd’s classic Up Pompeii and ITV 2’s Plebs are both set in Rome, this one moves to British shores.
Chelmsford 123 was a Channel 4 offering, that ran between 1988 and 1990 for two series, one of six episodes and one of seven.
Summary
Rome: AD 123, a power struggle between Roman governor Aulus Paulinus (Jimmy Mulville) and the British chieftain, Badvoc (Rory McGrath) is in full swing.
Chelmsford: AD123, in contrast to Rome, Britain is seen as a miserable place, cold and wet. As the power struggle in Rome continues, Britain could be just the place to exile Aulus for accidentally insulting the Emperor’s horse, but also give him something useful to do.
