Doctor Who, The Crusade, 1965

The Crusade is the sixth story in Doctor Who’s second season.  First broadcast in four weekly parts in 1965.

This serial was the third and final story to be novelised by Frederick Muller publishers. Written by David Whittaker as Doctor Who And The Crusaders.

It would be 1973 before Doctor Who novelisations appeared again, when Target Books launched its long-running line of episode adaptations, beginning with reprints of this and the preceding two novels.

The TARDIS materialises in 12th Century Palestine.  Here the travellers find themselves in the middle of a holy war between the forces of King Richard the Lionheart and the Saracen ruler Saladin.

The Doctor – William Hartnell

Only two of the four episodes still exist within BBC archives.  A VHS video release with linking narration by William Russell was released in 1999.  The story has yet to get a DVD release.
