Hamish And Dougal…

You’ll Have Had Your Tea: The Doings Of Hamish And Dougal, 2002

The fictional characters Hamish and Dougal first appeared in one of the rounds of another Radio Comedy series: I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue.

In this round (Sound Charades) the title of a book is conveyed from one team to the other by means of a story; the result of the story is usually a pun on the title in question. During the round panellists Barry Cryer and Graeme Garden often tell their story as Hamish and Dougal, who are two elderly Scottish gentlemen.  One of the characters was originally called Angus.

Hamish and Dougal first appeared as fully fledged characters in a 1995 Christmas Special edition of: I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, where  the duo gave the clue for ‘The Queen’s Peach’  It would be seven years before a spin off series featuring the characters appeared on BBC Radio.

The spin-off show was named in reference to the fact that the characters’ sketches on I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue began with a variant of the line “You’ll have had your tea then, Hamish”.  For the series the two lead actors were joined by two other regular actors who were regular panellists on I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue.

Hamish And Dougal ran for just eighteen episodes over three series.

Summary

Episodes for the series were fifteen minutes long and effectively extended versions of the one minute sketches from I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue.  The material for the series relied heavily on sexual innuendo, Scottish stereotypes and the referral to long-running jokes from the parent series.
