Doctor Who And The Comedy Connection
Currently marking the 20th Anniversary of it’s second run, the good Doctor has had many comedy connections.
First Doctor
William Hartnell was a well respected actor known for a number of films. However he is also notable for being in the first of three very significant series.
He was the first Doctor Who
He played a Sergeant in the very first Carry On Film – Carry On Sergeant
Sgt. Maj. Percy Bullimore in The Army Game, ITV’s first sitcom
Second Doctor
Patrick Troughton was a character actor. He played the second Doctor between 1966 and 1969. He remains popular amongst fans and his fellow Doctors. After Doctor Who his career carried on with some notable appearances in comedy drama Minder.
The Two Ronnies
ITV sitcom, Only When I Laugh
Among his final TV work was popular sitcom The Two Of Us
Third Doctor
With his trademark cape Jon Pertwee took on the role of the third Doctor.
No stranger to comedy Pertwee starred in the long running BBC Radio sitcom
The Navy Lark
Fourth Doctor
A long scarf floppy hat and trademark wit. Tom Baker played the most popular incarnation of The Doctor.
On the comedy front he played Captain Redbeard Rum in the second series of Blackadder
He appeared on The Kenny Everett Television Show
And of course it was Tom Baker’s voice that narrated Little Britain
The Fifth Doctor
Peter Davison took control of the TARDIS in 1981 and perhaps has the most prolific comedy association from comedy drama to sitcom here are some of the highlights
The Sixth Doctor
Colin Baker had runs in comedy stage plays and uncredited appearances in TV sitcoms including: No -That’s Me Over Here! Now Look Here.
The Seventh Doctor
Sylvester Mc Coy took on the role as the seventh Doctor. Associated with some great Kids TV including Tiswas
Like his predecessor there are just a couple of sitcom appearances including the un-screened pilot episode of Lucky Feller
