Meet The Wife, 1963

Meet The Wife was one of a number of hit sitcoms that sprung from the now legendary BBC Comedy Playhouse.

An early success for writers Ronald Chesney and Ronald Wolfe, it also features an early sitcom appearance for Thora Hird.  The series started life as “The Bed” an episode of Comedy Playhouse in 1963.  A year later it returned as a full series under the title “Meet The Wife”.  It would run for thirty nine episodes over five series over the next three years.

Meet The Wife follows the various ups and downs of a middle-aged married couple: Freddie and Thora Blacklock.

Freddie is a plumber who likes a bet and a drink before coming home.  Thora on the the other hand has ambitions to improve the couple’s social standing and is noted for her incessant talking while giving her husband a hard time.  The couple have at least two children, one named Peter who is now 23 and married the other we don’t hear about
