Celebrating 20 years
The show that introduced us to the Kumars. Goodness Gracious Me was originally aired as a radio series in 1996. Proving popular it moved to BBC TV two years later in 1998.
It is the TV series that this post details. Running for three series between 1998 and 2000 for nineteen episodes. In Februry 2001 there was a special episode “Back Where They Came From” with parts filmed in India. Two reunion specials followed in 2014 and 2015 before the show finally did come to an end.
The series won the award for Best Entertainment Show at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards and the Team Award from the Royal Television Society, UK, both in 1999.
The series is a sketch based show parodying the conflict and integration between traditional Indian culture and modern British life.
Some sketches reversed the roles to view the British from an Indian perspective, and others poked fun at Indian stereotypes.
