The Real McCoy, 1991

Considered ground breaking at the time The real McCoy was a comedy sketch show eaturing an array of black and Asian comedy stars.

First aired in 1991 the show ran for five full series until 1996.  In 1995 the regular format took a break being replaced with a short series (four episodes) of clips from previous series.  The show returned to it’s regular format in 1996 for a final series.

The show was a huge success, quickly becoming a cult hit and reaching audiences of 5 million.

Summary

Sketch based comedy show with special guest appearances from stars such as Frank Bruno and Ian Wright.

Whilst mainly a sketch based comedy show, the dance troupe Danserious also performed short routines throughout the first series with longer routines to entire songs in series two.

In series three, the dance sections were replaced with studio performances from a different musical act each week in keeping with the show’s theme these would again be black/asian performers and featured top names such as Mica Paris, The Real Thing and Ruby Turner.

From series four the musical acts were replaced with stand up routines.
