The Changes, 1975
The Changes was a ten part kids science-fiction series that first aired in early 1975.
Adapted from a trilogy of books by author Peter Dickinson. The BBC described ‘The Changes’ as a “serial for older children”, However despite it’s darker feel it was broadcast in the late afternoon schedule of regular children’s TV programs.
I can remember watching this as a kid and finding it quite eerie, I never looked at electricity pylons in the same way again.
Summary
Set in Britain. A sudden enveloping noise emanating from all machinery and technology causes the population to rebel against it.
As a result, many people find themselves displaced and society reverts back to a pre-industrial age.
People become deeply suspicious of anyone who may be harbouring machinery. Even the words for technology are taboo.
Those parts of technology that escape destruction (such as electricity pylons) produce a physical and sometimes violent repulsion among those left in Britain.
Events in the series are seen through the eyes of teenage schoolgirl: Nicky Gore. The series traces Nicky’s quest to reunite with her parents and solve the mystery.
