Fawlty Towers, At 40 Plus It’s Still Making Us Laugh
In 1975, John Cleese and Connie Booth wrote a sitcom inspired by an encounter with an eccentric hotelier from John Cleese’s time as a member of Monty Python.
It only ever ran for two series of six episodes each in 1975 and 1979, but what a legacy it’s left behind as it remains one of Britain’s best loved sitcoms.
Over the years there’s been the video and DVD releases and countless stage plays of selected episodes.
Then in February 2023 came an exciting announcement….John Cleese was to give Basil one last outing.
The idea was to write the script with his daughter Camilla Cleese. The plot would see Basil and his daughter, who he has just discovered is his, team up to run a boutique hotel.
Well two years have passed and no signs yet of a new series. However John Cleese has returned to Fawlty Towers adapting some of the best moments from the original series into a smash hit West End play: “John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers”
Currently running at the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End it’s going on a Nationwide tour. Tour dates and tickets from the play’s Official Website
