Starring the late great Dame Thora Hird. Hallelujah was an ITV sitcom that ran for fifteen episodes over two series, between 1983 and 1984.
The series was Thora Hird’s second time working with writer Dick Sharples whom she had previously worked with on ‘In Loving Memory’.
Hallelujah featured guest appearences from Countdown legend Richard Whiteley and Michael Aldridge, whom a year later she would co-star with when they both joined the cast of Last Of The Summer Wine.
Set in a Salvation Army citadel in the fictional Yorkshire towns of: Brigthorpe (series one) and Blackwick (series two).
The show referred to the fictional towns as being in the Leeds area of Britain.
Salvation Army Captain Emily Ridley has fought the Devil and all his works with a vigour and sincerity second to none for over forty years,
Unfortunately, when latter-day sinners seem reluctant to respond to the old hellfire-and-brimstone brand of evangelism, Emily’s superiors decide it’s time for her to lay down her arms and retire from the battlefield.
Captain Ridley finds herself posted to the quiet little Yorkshire town of Brigthorpe which, she is convinced, is in urgent need of salvation…
