King Rollo, 1980
King Rollo was a kids TV series from the creator of Mr Benn.
The series ran for 13 episodes in 1980 originally shown as part of the BBC’s ‘See-Saw’ strand of children’s pre-school TV programs.
Like Mr Benn King Rollo used the same colourful cut-out paper look animations, this 2D animation style saved on production costs whilst adding to the show’s charm.
The character himself like Mr Benn first appeared in a series of books and a comic strip in the magazine ‘Buttons’.
Summary
The series follows the adventures of King Rollo, a childlike king who is always in need of advice and assistance from his friends.
Among these friends are The Magician (a father figure); Cook (the king’s cook, a mother figure, who was arguably the real ruler of the kingdom); his neighbour and girlfriend, Queen Gwen; King Frank; and Rollo’s cat, Hamlet, who was generally portrayed as wiser than Rollo himself.
