Paperplay

Paperplay, 1974

Paperplay is another one of those ITV lunchtime kids shows that readers of a certain age may remember.

The show was one of a number of shorts (10 miniutes) that would go out in the daily 12.00pm  lunchtime slot and during it’s, just short of, seven year run it notched up an impressive one hundred and eighty two episodes.

Paperplay was the idea of Susan Shanks, a former presenter of another popular kids TV show Magpie.

Summary

In each show, Stranks would make simple creations from paper and other household waste.  She as assisted by two mischievous hand puppet spiders called Itsy and Bitsy . Itsy was the red male, growling spider and Bitsy the yellow female, squeaking spider.

Occasionally they were joined by other puppets, such as Boris the ladybird, Cardew the caterpilar and Katie the bird.
