Till Death Us Do Part, Strikes And Blackouts

Alf Garnett faces the challenges power cuts

With all the news headlines talking about possible power cuts and drawing comparisons with the 1970’s it got me thinking about an episode of Till Death Us Do Part in which Alf experiences the perils of strikes and blackouts.

Strikes and Blackouts was the third episode of series 5 of the popular sitcom, first broadcast in 1974.  It’s been repeated on the now defunct Galaxy channel from BSB and was one of three episodes featured on a BBC Video release.

Star of the show has to be Olu Jacobs who plays a black TV Repairman.  His lines as you’ll see in the episode steal the show.

Summary

It’s 1974 and Britain is in the grip of a miners’ strike.  A game of monopoly sends Alf into a rage when Else dithers.  Before long he’s off on a rant the miners, Harold Wilson and Son In Law Mike all feel the edge of his tongue. To make matters worse the TV is on the blink.

There are laughs a plenty when Alf launches into a rant about race just as a black TV repairman turns up.  He delights in taunting Alf “Magic, Black Magic” he tells Alf before charging him £3 for the repair.  Just then there’s a power cut or so it seems.
