Each series generally comprised 7 episodes each with the exception of series 2 which stuck to the popular six format.
Whilst based on Peter Tinniswood’s novels the TV version stuck to the traditions of sitcom presenting generally light-hearted versions of the stories from the books.
the main cast comprised of some familiar names: John Comer of Last Of The Summer Wine fame (Bernard Thompson who produced the series served as producer on series 2 of Last Of The Summer Wine), Liz Smith more recently famed as Nana in the Royle family, Robin Bailey who took on the role of Potter after Arthur Lowe died.
Eight years after the TV series had ended Peter Tinniswood wrote a further six series for BBC Radio 4 featuring members of the Brandon family. The radio version ran between 1987 and 1996, it featured a different cast.
Summary
Meet the Brandon family, an extended Northern clan struggling with the miseries and stresses of family life.
There’s relentless pessimist Uncle Mort, his sharp-tongued sister Annie (who is constantly arguing with husband Les), their laid-back son Carter, and his not-so-laid-back fiancée Pat.
The clan’s completed by old Uncle Stavely who carries his friend’s ashes around his neck in a box and only enters the constant bickering with cries of “I ‘eard that! Pardon?”
