Canned Carrott

Canned Carrott, 1990

After a string of TV successes in the late 1970’s and through the 1980’s, there was no slowing Jasper Carrott down as we arrived in the 1990’s.

Canned Carrot ran for two series , twelve episodes and five specials between 1990 and 1995.  The show will be perhaps best remembered for it’s “The Detectives” sketches.  Such was the popularity of the sketch “The Detectives” became a series in it’s own right.

Canned Carrott also introduced us to comedians Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis who also went on to launch their own career.

Summary

Canned Carrott was a mixture of Jasper Carrott’s unique stand up routines and sketches.

The two best remembered sketches are: “Wiggy” about a man with an unconvincing wig (played by Carrott).  It was a slapstick comedy in which the characters were silent except for the narrator, similar in style to Mr Bean and The Benny Hill Show.  The other popular sketch was “The Detectives”, featuring two mediocre police officers, Briggs and Louis (played by Carrott and Robert Powell, who try, unsuccessfully, to emulate the actions of television detectives.
