Open All Hours, A Mattress On Wheels, 1976
The second episode from the classic sitcom sees Granville trying to persuade Arkwright to to deliveries in a van. The idea of persuading Arkwright to buy a van had been explored in the pilot episode three years earlier.
Summary
“Why don’t we get a van?” bemoans Granville.
Fed up with having to do deliveries for the shop in all weathers on his bike Granville suggests that Arkwright invest in a van, but Arkwright’s always been dead against getting a van,.
However, undeterred Granville points out the advantages of taking a lady friend for a drive. Arkwright still balks at the expense, until Granville pints out it could be a means of impressing Nurse Gladys.
So Arkwright buys a second hand van and Granville wishes he hadn’t when he takes it out on the road.
