Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, 50 Years Old

Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, 50 Years Old Today, Who’d Believe It?

It still holds a place in sitcom lovers hearts and remains one of our most popular posts, but who would believe it was 50 years ago this very day we first met Frank Spencer.

It was 8pm on Thursday 15th February 1973, just after Top Of The Pops that the first episode appeared on our screens.  A series of five episodes followed with the second series repeated later the same year.

You can view our Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em post here, but today we look back at that first episode – “Getting A Job”

Summary

Newly married Frank and Betty Spencer are living with Betty’s Mother, Mrs Fisher, whilst they wait to move into their new flat.

Currently unemployed Frank needs a job.  Having managed to secure a job interview at Lewis & Co.’s ironmongers for the position of area sales manager, Betty has bought Frank a new briefcase.

With Betty’s advice of remembering to smile, Frank turns up at his interview later than expected, after getting stuck in a lift. When he finally meets the general manager, Mr Lewis, he causes him a lot of frustration.

By the end of the interview, Mr Lewis is on the verge of a breakdown, a trait we will see a lot during the show’s run.
