More Overdubbed Kids Holiday TV!

The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe, 1965

If you were a kid in 1975 watching morning TV you’d have been watching this.

Its time to cringe or just chuckle again as we present more of the rubbish or classics we used to watch as Kids.

This time it’s Robinson Crusoe, at the time the book was well read and even most kids had probably heard of the character.  these days it would b Robinson Who?

The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe was a French-German kids TV drama series based on the 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe.  the show made it’s TV debut in 1964 in Germany finding it’s way to the USA the same year.  The series comprised 4 x 90 min episodes.

Stretched to 13 shorter episodes and dubbed into English the series hit the UK in 1965.  The BBC certainly got their money’s worth.  It was repeated in 1967 and 1969.  It was repeated again in 1973 as part of BBC Kids TV schedules and again in the summer holidays of August 1975.  It popped up again on Saturday mornings in March 1977.  It finally ran out of steam being screened from episode 3 as part of a BBC Saturday morning show “Get Set For Summer” in 1982.

Summary

The show tells the story of Robinson Crusoe, a young sailor, who whilst travelling on a ship from Brazil to Africa, a violent storm casts him onto a deserted island off the coast of South America. He spends his solitude in remembering his youthful escapades in York.

Each episode as Crusoe goes about surviving his new life with just a dog and a parrot for company he recalls his past life and the events leading up to the shipwreck.

Along the way he fights off cannibals rescuing a man who becomes his companion Friday.

In the final part Friday and Robinson defeat mutineers who arrive on the island and escape from the island.
