The Liver Birds (Revival)

The Liver Birds (Revival), 1996

The 1990’s seemed to be marked as a decade of comebacks.  Many popular sitcoms and even comedians from past decades made a comeback in the decade.

The Liver Birds had been a huge success for writer Carla Lane running for nine series in it’s day.  Seventeen years after the original series ended the BBC decided to revive it.

All the ingredients for success were there, Carla Lane writing, the return of Nerys Hughes and Polly James.  However, despite the success of the original the revival failed to catch on with viewers and lasted just one series of six episodes.

The BBC admitted that some liberties were taken with continuity: Carmel McSharry  who had played Carol’s mother in series 8-9 returned, but this time she played Beryl’s mother.  Michael Angelis who had played Carol’s rabbit-obsessed brother Lucien Boswel in the original series also returned.  However this time round he played Beryl’s brother Lucien Hennessey.

Summary

Liver Birds Beryl and Sandra are re-united.  The series follows the two friends as they cope with the aftermath of of their respective failed marriages.
