The Windsors

The Windsors, 2016

Always a tricky subject but never far from the minds of comedy writers are: The Royals.  This part soap opera, part sitcom is in it’s second season at the time of writing.

The series certainly divided opinion with The Daily Telegraph saying of the first episode “The Windsors was rude, crude – and a real blast of punk comedy”,  The series has also drawn criticism from some over it’s storylines such as Kate Middleton catching ebola and Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice getting radicalised.

To date there have been three series and three specials. there had been talk of a fourth series but In April 2024, it was announced that production had been indefinitely postponed on the fourth series, owing to real-life health scares affecting senior members of the Royal Family.

It was also reported that plans had been arranged to recast the role of Camilla following Haydn Gwynne’s death, or to write out the characters of Charles and Camilla completely to concentrate the series “on the younger generations, with their majesties ‘away on tour'”.

At the time of this post there was no firm news.

Summary

The Windsors puts the British Royal Family into the comedy spotlight again, but this time in the form of a soap opera based on what their lives and loves might just be like.
