You Just Can’t Keep A good Idea Down!
Supermarkets good idea for a sitcom? It would seem so, Way back in the mists of time (1984) we had Tripper’s Day, then in 1986: Slinger’s Day. Of course there was the Coronation Street comedy duo Reg Holdsworth and Norman Watts of Freshco.
Fast forward to 2011 and TV is a different world. Through cable and satellite we have more channels than ever before and with stand up comedy being so huge the race is on to find the next BIG sitcom. One of the biggest players in modern TV is SKY who havev being pouring millions into original programs with some success. It should come as no surprise then that the idea of a sitcom in Supermarket might be a good one.
It would seem they were right with Trollied as to date it’s notched up five series and three Christmas specials. What’s more important is the biggest player BBC usually only commisions a series for six episodes at a time. Trollied clocks thirteen episodes a series, now that’s confidence in a show.
Set in the fictional supermarket of Valco in Warrington. Here the hapless staff deal with the everyday problems of running a value supermarket in the north west of England.
The series explores the relationships between the staff, customers and managers as romances and rivalries blossom on the shop floor, along with a realistic supermarket atmosphere that customers and store employees in reality can relate to. This includes customer stereotypes and rivalries with other store branches such as Valco in Wigan.
