Steptoe And Son, Porn Yesterday

Steptoe And Son, Porn Yesterday, 1974

As we went through the sweltering heat of Monday and Tuesday it reminded me of the introduction to an episode of Steptoe and Son.

Porn Yesterday was one of the best.  First broadcast in 1974 it was the third episode in the eighth and final series of the hugely successful sitcom.

Whilst many note it was the last regular success for writers Galton and Simpson they had been at the very top of their game for over 20 years and had nothing to prove.  They would go on to have success with the format they had enjoyed so much prior to Steptoe, the series of one offs, before Alan Simpson retired from script writing in 1978.

Summary

After a long hot day on the cart Harold has found an old What The Butler Saw machine.  Returning home in the heat he finds Albert sunbathing.

Albert is delighted and can hardly contain his excitement at the find.  However his excitement is short lived when Harold tells him when the film was made as Albert’s ‘dirty’ past catches up with him.

When the vicar calls he is delighted to see the machine as it’s just what he needs at his fete to raise funds for the Church.   Harold is reluctant to lend the machine to him but agrees to lend the empty machine.

At the fete Harold is horrified that another cartridge has been found.  However the Vicar is delighted to find Albert is the star of the show and puts a 2 shillings price on autographs.
