On The Town With The League Of Gentlemen

On The Town With The League Of Gentlemen, 1997

The forerunner to the hugely successful League Of Gentlemen TV series was this six part BBC Radio series, first broadcast in 1997.

Whereas the TV series was set in Royston Vasey, the radio series was set in the fictional town of Spent.

On The Town With The League Of Gentlemen won a Sony Award for it’s six part run.  Two years later the series made it to BBC TV as The league Of Gentlemen.

Summary

Spent is an isolated and rather odd town somewhere in the North of England. Its’ inhabitants are ferried around by Barbara, a taxi driver half way through his sex change and served by Mr Ingleby, who brings a whole new meaning to the term small shopkeeper.

Benjamin Denton is from outside the town of Spent.  He goes to visit his aunt and uncle in Spent to be interviewed for a job at the local power plant.  Not surprisingly, he misses the interview and is forced to stay longer than expected.
