Tarzan

Tarzan, 1966

Continuing our look at some of the TV shows we watched during summer holidays in years gone by particularly the 1970’s, by now you must be thinking we watched some rubbish

This show was popular as a regular fixture on Kids TV in the 1970’s but would also pop up on ITV during summer holidays.

Tarzan had first appeared on the big screen in 1932 played by Johnny Wieissmuller, by 1966 Tarzan had been the subject of 37 big screen appearances so the next natural step was TV.

Swinging onto TV screens in the USA in 1966 the show ran for 57 episodes over 2 series between 1966 and 1968.  It followed onto British TV in 1967 and was a regular fixture during the 1970’s ITV kids programming.

This series retained many of the trappings of the film series, including the famous Tarzan “Yell” and chimpanzee Cheetah but did not include Jane.  Instead we were introduced to Jai (a young orphan boy).

Summary

Raised in the Jungle by Apes, before being found and returned to civilisation the now well educated Lord Greystone has grown tired and fed up with modern life.

He returns to the Jungle and as Tarzan alongside chimpanzee “Cheetah” and a young orphan Boy “Jai” takes on poachers and other “bad guys” who threaten the Jungle.
