Originally screened as part of the commemorations for the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.  However like all good TV it proved to be a hit with viewers and as the first series came to an end the BBC announced there would be a Christmas Special followed by a second series and a second Christmas Special both airing in 2017.  Not long after series two the BBC announced a third series and Christmas Special for 2018,

The title quotes “an upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers”,   this quote came from a critique of Shakespeare by his rival Robert Greene in his published work a Groat’s – Worth Of Wit.  

Summary

Set in 1592 (the year of Robert Greene’s publication).

They follow the life of William Shakespeare as he starts to make a name for himself in London while also trying to be a good husband and father for his family in Stratford-upon-Avon.
