Dad’s Army – Radio Series – 1974

Like many sitcoms of the day many of the Dad’s Army TV episodes were remade for BBC Radio 4 with the original cast, although other actors played Walker after James Beck’s death.  The radio version ran for three series between 1974 and 1976, with one Christmas Special in 1974.

They were adapted for radio by Harold Snoad and Michael Knowles (it ain’t Alf Hot Mum) who would later write the spin off series It Sticks Out Half A Mile.  The radio version also featured John Snagge as a newsreader who would set the scene for each episode.

Different actors were used for some of the minor parts; Mollie Sugden played the role of Mrs Fox and Pearl Hackney played the role of Mrs. Pike for example.  Episode 1 was actually based on a revised version of events seen in the opening of the film version rather than the TV pilot.

The series like it’s TV counterpart enjoys regular repeats on digital radio BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Summary

The radio series remains a faithful recreation of it’s TV counterpart following the misadventures of the Walmington On Sea platoon of The Home Guard.
