Hancock’s Commercials

Hancock’s Commercials, 1965

After his split with writers Galton and Simpson in 1961 Tony Hancock’s career never really recovered.  We’ve concentrated today’s posts on some of the work he did after that split.

Around 1965 Tony Hancock made a series of 11 TV adverts for the Egg Marketing Board in which he starred alongside Patricia Hayes reprising her Mrs Cravatte character.  It’s ironic as in an episode of his final TV series ‘The Bowmans’ after being sacked from his role in a radio series his character ends up promoting pilchards in TV ads.  Hancock refers to this as “a lean period in the pilchards ads”.

There was an earlier ad featuring Hancock promoting Dr Beeching’s plan to reduce railway mileage regretfully it does not appear to be available in any public archive.
