Hope It Rains

Hope It Rains, 1991

Continuing our look back at some of the lesser known works from some of TV sitcom’s finest writers.  This week we turn our attentions to John Esmonde and Bob Larbey.

By 1991 this duo had notched up quite a few successes not least the long running On The Buses and of course The Good Life.  Hope It Rains was an ITV sitcom and was one of the duo’s  final works.  It ran for 13 episodes over 2 series between 1991 and 1992.

Summary

Harry Nash is perfectly content in his selfish, snug in his bachelor world,.  Harry runs the Empire Wax Museum in a run-down seaside resort, always dreaming of more rain  (hence the title of the show) because it brings in more customers.

However his world is turned upside down with the arrival of his 18-year-old god-daughter, Jace , upon the death of her parents.

Jace is an abrasive character who sees herself as the victim of a tough childhood and is not above playing up to it.  She takes an immediate dislike to Harry – a feeling that is most definitely reciprocated.
