Prunella Scales Dies, Aged 93
The death of Fawlty Towers actress Prunella Scales has been announced by her family.
She died “peacefully at home in London yesterday”, her sons Samuel and Joseph said.
Scales was best known for playing hotel manager Sybil Fawlty, the long-suffering and domineering wife of Basil – played by John Cleese – in the classic British sitcom.
The family added that she was watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died. Fawlty Towers co-star John Cleese paid tribute, describing Scales as “a really wonderful comic actress”. He said: “Scene after scene she was absolutely perfect.”
Whilst she will be best remembered for her role in Fawlty Towers, Prunella Scales was a hugely successful actress with other comedy hits under her belt including TV and Radio sitcoms After Henry and Marriage Lines.
