That’s An Animated Mess You’ve Gotten Me Into !

Laurel and Hardy, The Animated Series, 1966

It was never going to be a good idea to try and recreate the Laurel and Hardy magic in cartoon form, but it happened.

Laurel and Hardy the animated series was an updated version of the famous duo’s comedic acts in cartoon form.

A co-production between the famous Hanna-Barbera animation studios and Larry Harmon Productions.

Producer Larry Harmon had been working on the idea since 1961.  Sadly Oliver Hardy had died in 1957 but Stan Laurel was still alive and is believed a to have had some, although very little involvement with production.

By the time the show went out both Laurel and Hardy had passed on (Laurel just one year previous in 1965) so Jim MacGeorge voiced Ollie and Stan was voiced by Larry Harmon.

A total of 156 episodes were made screened over one season from 1966 in the USA.  As you might expect the series failed to hit the mark and therefore in 1967 after the final short the series was cancelled.  However the cartoon was picked up by the BBC in the 1970’s as part of their kids teatime schedule.  If I remember rightly it went out just after Playschool.
