The Picnic, 1976

The first of two short films from The Two Ronnies.  Unlike the lavish dialog used in the TV series “The Picnic” is silent, relying instead on visual gags, various sound effects and a musical score from veteran BBC composer: Ronnie Hazlehirst.  The humour could be compared to that used by Benny Hill in his Thames shows.

Despite starring Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett, since it’s initial 1976 screening The Picnic has rarely been repeated.  Although ITV3 have in recent years given it a few outings.

Some of the characters from “The Picnic” would return six years later in a follow up “By The Sea”

When a crusty old English General takes his eccentric family on a family picnic trip in the Devon countryside, comic chaos ensues.
