Les Dawson’s First Blankety Blank, 1984
This year marks 40 years since Les Dawson took over presenting Blankety Blank from Terry Wogan.
Today we look back at Les’ first show in charge.
Blankety Blank had been running since 1979 and had notched up six series. When, in 1983, original host Terry Wogan decided to step down. Les Dawson was the perfect replacement.
Whilst this was Les’ first show in charge it was actually his third appearance on the show, having being a panellist twice during Terry Wogan’s tenure as host.
Les would go on to host until 1990 when the BBC ended the show.

With Les in charge nothing was off limits in the name of laughter and he could hardly contain himself over all those wonderful prizes. Les would go on to host until 1990 when the BBC ended the show.
