A Day Out At The Seaside, Carry On Style

Carry On Girls, 1973

It’s hard to believe this film is now 50 years old, from a time when a day out or holiday at the seaside was walks along the seafront, ice cream, donkey rides and if you were lucky there was the local beauty contest.

Carry On Girls was the 25th film in the series and notable for the absence of Kenneth Williams, who was unavailable at the time and Charles Hawtrey who had been dropped from the series.  It was also notable for Jack Douglas who whilst making his third appearance in the series, Carry On Girls was his first with a main role.

Whilst as with the other films in the series the interiors were filmed at Pinewood Studios the exteriors were shot in Brighton with the exception of the Railway Station scenes that were shot at Marylebone Railway Station, London.

Summary

The seaside town of Fircombe is facing a crisis – it’s always raining and there’s nothing for the tourists to do.

Riding to the rescue is local councillor Sidney Fiddler, who persuades the Mayor to help improve the image of their rundown seaside town by holding a beauty contest.

However the formidable Councillor Prodworthy, head of the local women’s liberation movement, has other ideas. It’s open warfare as the women’s lib attempt to sabotage the contest.
