Doc Martin, 2004

Doc Martin is a hugely popular comedy drama that to date has ran for eight series with a ninth due to begin September 2019.

The character of Doc Martin is based on Dr Martin Bamford, a character in the 2000 comedy film ‘Saving Grace’ whilst the location filming for the fictional seaside village of Portwenn is done in Port Issac, Cornwall.

Doctor Martin Ellingham is a brilliant and successful vascular surgeon at Imperial College, London .  After he develops haemophobia (fear of blood) he finds it’s time for a change of career.  Obtaining a post as sole G.P. in a quiet Cornish village of Portwenn, he relocates.

The series revolves around the exploits of Doc Martin and the interaction with his patients.   Despite his medical excellence Doc Martin is grouchy, abrupt, and lacks social skills.  This makes for much humour as the villagers react to his complete lack of any bedside manner and dry wit.
