Haggard, 1990

A forgotten gem from writer Eric Chappell.  Haggard didn’t just benefit from the talent’s of an established writer but the cast featured a number of well known names including: Keith Barron (Duty Free and Sam Kelly (Allo, Allo).

Haggard was based on the book  Squire Haggard’s Journal by Michael Green and ran for fourteen episodes over two series between 1990 and 1992, making it’s debut in 1992 running for 7 episodes before taking a break and returning for a final 7 episodes in 1992.

The show made use of the production style known as breaking the fourth wall, with Fanny Foulacre, Roderick’s girlfriend, making asides to the camera, commenting on the situations she finds herself in.

Summary

Set during 1777—1778, in the Georgian era, the series revolves around the exploits of Squire Haggard, the Squire’s 25-year-old son Roderick, and their servant Grunge.
