Monty Python, The Albums
When you talk about Monty Python, everyone remembers the TV series and the films, some may even remember the stage shows. However not everyone will remember the albums. Remember those? 12″ vinyl things with a hole in the middle and later CD’s.
Between 1970 and 2014 there were eighteen Monty Python albums released. Many were compilations of material from their TV series, some soundtracks and even some original material. There is even an unreleased album: The Hastily Cobbled Together For A Fast Buck Album.
As it’s National Album Day we are looking at some of those albums.
‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’ was the first album to be released by The Pythons. It was recorded in one day in front of a live audience at the Camden Theatre in London. Recalling the rather muted response, Eric Idle would later claim “they were a particularly dead audience.”
It was the first piece of media the team released, in 1970 there were no videos or DVD’s. As copyright is still owned by the BBC this album is one of the few pieces of Python material not owned by the Python team themselves.
Feeling disenchanted with BBC production methods the Monty Python team released subsequent albums on a different record label.
Summary
Monty Python’s Flying Circus albums featured new versions of sketches from the first Monty Python’s Flying Circus TV series, soundtracks from films and recordings of live shows.
