We Are The Champions

We Are The Champions, 1973

How about a little exercise for today’s post.  Let’s go back 49 years and look back at this perhaps forgotten Kids TV series.

We Are The Champions jumped onto our Kids TV schedules in June 1973, by the time it ended it’s run, in 2010, it had clocked up 16 series, 91 episodes and 13 specials.

The show was hosted by BBC sports commentator and athletics coach Ron Pickering who continued in the role right up until his death in 1991.

The original show ran until 1987, from 1983 a number of annual special editions were also broadcast, again until 1991 these were hosted by Ron Pickering.  The special Editions would continue until 1995.  In 2010 the series enjoyed a brief revival over a final 5 shows as part of the BBC’s Sport’s Relief programming.

Summary

The programme was formatted around a traditional British school sports day, in which children compete in various athletics and swimming competitions.

Each programme would conclude with Pickering shouting to the children “”Away Y’ Go” at which point they would all run and jump/dive into the swimming pool as the titles ran.
