Harvest Festival, Comedy Style, Part 2

Dad’s Army, All Is Safely Gathered In, 1972

As this year marks 180 years of the modern Harvest Festival we are looking at how comedy has looked at the festival.  In the previous post we saw Terry and Arthur mixed up in an inner city Harvest Festival and for our second post it’s an all time classic with Captain Mainwaring and his platoon.

All is safely gathered in was the 8th episode of series 5 of the popular comedy. First broadcast in 1972 it’s a classic and was a personal favourite of writer David Croft who had once described the episode as “a joyous thing” in an interview with Graham McCann.

All is safely gathered in is said to authentically recreate a wartime harvest.

Summary

When Private Godfrey requests leave to help an old flame gather in her harvest Captain Mainwaring, citing the harvest as vital to the war effort, offers the assistance of the platoon.

Meanwhile, ARP Warden Hodges has a narrow escape from a falling bomb and, in a crisis of faith, decides to assist them.
